Step 4 of 8Social and legal

Social transition and support.

Non-medical steps you can take at any time, in any order, or not at all. None of this is a "test" you have to pass for clinical care.

Team talk

There is no required path.

People sometimes feel social transition is a checklist they have to complete to be taken seriously. It isn't. Some people choose every step, some choose none, and some change their mind in either direction. All of those are ordinary.

Option talk

What's available, in plain terms.

Name and pronouns

  • You can use any name and pronouns at any time, at home, with friends, at work, with your GP.
  • You can change your name on most NHS records by asking your GP practice.
  • Largely reversible, you can change your mind.

Presentation

  • Clothes, hair, makeup, voice, posture, the day-to-day texture of how you show up.
  • You can experiment privately first, in pockets, or commit visibly. The pace is yours.
  • Reversible.

Documents

  • You can change your name by deed poll and update passport, driving licence, bank, employer, and most other records.
  • A Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) changes the gender on your birth certificate. It is not required for NHS treatment.
  • Document changes are reversible but involve admin.

Workplace, school, family

  • You are protected against gender-reassignment discrimination under the Equality Act 2010. This protection does not require a GRC or medical treatment.
  • Safety matters more than tidiness, go at the pace that is safe for you.
  • Support exists for difficult workplaces and families (see Resources).
